On Mountain Time

Hi Friends!

Jonny and I (and Stanley) are back home and getting reacquainted with "city life" after enjoying the snow in the mountains and being on leisurely mountain time for the last few weeks.  We were really starting to think that we may not ever come home.  We just love being up there and enjoying the fresh air so much - it is incredibly peaceful.  And any place that encourages a cup of cocoa and chocolate chip cookie a day gets bonus points in my book!

I got a lot of questions about this cape when I posted it on Instagram last week.  It is from my favorite Vail boutique, Blitz.  Blitz has been around forever (shared another favorite from them here and here) and always has something that I can't resist (seriously, they are probably the reason I have 97 pom pom hats).  It was too cold to think about dresses, but their dress selection is always spot on! If you have a trip to Vail planned be sure to stop by!

I think everyone needs a pair of these liquid leggings and you cant beat the $29 price tag!  Also, I love the height of these boots (also come in a pretty tan)- they hit right at the knee which makes them very versatile.

Easy as Pizza Pie

With below freezing temperatures last week and sneaking away and getting stuck (for an unexpected extended stay) in the mountains this week, it has been a little difficult to stick to all of my resolutions.  Ahem... eating mostly clean, upping my vitamin intake, and sticking to a daily routine with my work and workouts.

When it is this cold and we are traveling with family and friends, it is always easiest to reach for fast and convenient food.  Last month, I stopped in Pizzeria Locale for a quick pizza lesson by owner, Lachlan Machnnon - Patterson himself and some lovely Denver blogger friends.  He taught us how to make his fluffy pizza dough that is made with simple, fresh ingredients, so when I have been reaching for the convenience of a quick slice recently, it doesn't seem nearly as indulgent.  Jonny and I have made this dough several times since this fun lesson - I must admit it is not as pretty as it turned out with the help of Chef, but just as yummy! (Recipe below)

Snow Day in Keystone

Hi Friends,

I hope your new year is off to a wonderful start!! We had such a wonderful time with our family in the mountains over New Years.  The house was full with Jonny's three brothers and their wives, two babies, Jonny's parents, and one puppy which made for a lot of love and laughter.

We were so lucky to get quite a bit of skiing in last week, but one day was just bitter cold and there was no way I was going to attempt to get on the mountain.  I stayed in a coffee shop at the base and waited patiently for Jonny to finish so I could partake in Apres (since that is often the best part of skiing anyway).

I doubled up on layers because it was so chilly.  I wore my new coat that I got for Christmas (thanks Mom!), I also love this one and this one and wore my warmest puffy coat on top (also wore it here) btw its on sale!  I layered this metallic pink blouse under my dress for another added layer.  Both my dress and top are H&M - I always love stopping in and finding such great affordable pieces (this dress was $15!).  I got a few questions about my hat when I wore it last week - it is old, but I found a very similar one here!

2016 in Review

I am not going to pretend that 2016 was all kinds of rosy - this year was a lot of learning and growing for me, maybe you can relate?  Jonny and I experienced the heartbreak of losing close friends and our first doggy. But 2016 also brought us some wonderful memories that we were so lucky to share.  

We traveled to six beautiful couples weddings and celebrated with countless friends! Checked off a few gorgeous sights on our bucket list.

 I visited Zoe, my littler sister and best friend in NYC and now she is back home in Denver which makes me so so happy.  

We added Sir Stanley to our family and we got to spend the holidays with both of our big families in beautiful Colorado.  It may not have been the year we had envisioned, but we feel so incredibly lucky.  Cheers to you and yours and to what 2017 may hold!

A Favorite Day at Trappers Cabin

This week in particular, I (as I am sure we all are), have been looking back and reflecting on my favorite moments of 2016.  I never got the opportunity to share this very special shoot from earlier this fall with you all, but it was definitely one of my very favorites to date. 

Jonny and I were asked to participate in a bridal styled shoot by one of my favorite photographers, Jenny Nelson (also shot this look, and this look in Vail last year).  Working in the creative space in Colorado has really allowed me to meet some of the most fantastic people who have instantly become dear friends and she is definitely one of them.  Jenny mentioned that it was a bridal shoot - I hesitated for about half a second because Jonny and I are like an old married couple now, and thought that could could be a little silly, but then realized that the shoot coincidentally coincided with our two year anniversary which made playing dress up with my forever groom that much more fun (well, and who doesn't wan't to wear a wedding dress again?).

This is at beautiful Trappers Cabin in Beaver Creek, which is about 15 minutes past where we actually got married, so the similarities to our actual wedding day were kind of amazing.  They have just opened this space for weddings and would be incredible for an elopement or very intimate wedding.  Right after visiting Trappers Cabin, I knew it would be perfect for one of my a good friend planning her wedding.  She and her soon to be groom will be one of the first to take advantage of this gorgeous space... I believe there is talk of skiing into their ceremony? How fun is that!

Colorado is small, and the beautiful mountain community is even smaller.  The lovely coordinator and brains behind this shoot was Jill Chalfant from Snapdragon Celebrations.  It turns out that Jill and I knew each other from (fun fact) when I was a ski school instructor one winter.  I was so excited she picked out this amazing blush tulle skirt and gorgeous lace top for me to wear from Anna Be! And Larisa Graham is MY FAVORITE videographer and I recommend her to everyone I know (she shot our wedding) and put together this fun video below of the day for Trappers Cabin.   I had never worked with either women from the hair (Kacee Picot) or makeup (Michelle McKamie) team before, and I am pretty picky about both and thought they were awesome!!

After Christmas Vacation

Hi Friends!

I hope you had a wonderful holiday weekend filled with joy, family, and delicious treats.  Jonny and I had a such a laid back Christmas this year - we spent almost the entire day in our pajamas and changed into some of our new Christmas gifts, just before dinner.  It was was the perfect Christmas.

We are packing up and heading to the mountains to spend the remainder of the holiday with Jonny's family today.  Packing may be one of my least favorite things, but for this holiday week it always seems a bit easier because I just pack all of my new Christmas sweaters, like this one $79 (thanks mom!), the sparkliest pieces in my closet, my coziest sweatshirts and socks to curl up in after a long ski day, and all. the. fur. (I've been waiting for another occasion to wear this poncho!).

Body Positivity with MAX athleticwear

Happy Wednesday Friends!! (and 4 days till Christmas!)

So lets get real-real for a second... I take a lot of pictures.  And sometimes (a lot of times) I really don't like the way I look, or have hated the way a shoot has turned out.  A typical New Year's resolution for me would be to say "I am going to work out more," or "I am going to lose X amount of lbs".  As I inch closer to 30 - I realize the most important thing that I can remind myself is to be confident in my own skin and love every inch of my body.

Although I still do my best to stick to a workout routine - because I love it!! It is always tough for me this time of year.  With Holiday parties, and friends in town, and happy hours.... all of those things sound wayyyyyy more fun than working out, but I am not going to stress if I miss one.  

One of my new favorite boutiques MAX Clothing (I got my favorite dress this season from there and talked more about it here!!) just started carrying several lines of amazing of athleisure wear.  I love the high waist band that these have - they don't slip down at CycleBar or when I am running errands which tends to happen with some leggings and the designs are so fun!

Jonny always needs a new jacket (or two).  With the weather constantly changing and outdoor activities here in Colorado he always has a need for a slightly different layer (or so he thinks ;) ).  

Jonny gets the a ton of use out his Patagonia jackets and fleeces - he wears them to the office, after skiing and out with friends, so you can imagine he wears through them pretty quickly.  I love this plain one and this quilted one, and know he has eye on a patterned one like this .  For work I always think it is nice for a guy to have a classic pea coat and this one is 65% off!  I also like the idea of an updated fun parka like this one $199 that is nice enough for work, but warm enough for weekends in the mountains.

Holiday Week of Chic: From our House to Yours and Minted Giveaway

It looks like we may have a white Christmas here in Colorado.  We woke up to about about a foot of fresh snow in Denver so I am currently debating if I am going to be at all productive today or hibernate for the rest of winter (or at least the day!).

Holiday Week of Chic: Tulle Skirt Giveaway!

Dressed in Holiday Style with MAX

Hi Guys!

I hope you had a wonderful week! I am so excited for some festive fun this weekend.  I love that there are so many opportunities to wear extra special dresses durning the holidays and that it is perfectly appropriate to wear sparkle, bows, and lace on just about everything.  

Last week I stopped in MAX Boutique in Cherry Creek (additional locations in Boulder and Aspen), which is at the very top of my list for for high end boutiques in Colorado!  Max, the owner is one of the friendliest people around and has amazing style! I can't wait to show you some other fun things I snagged while I was there.  They carry a ton of beautiful Self Portrait dresses which are perfect for the holidays!!  My dress is sold out online, but available at MAX and found some similar options (here, here, and here).

I wore this dress to Jonny's office holiday party earlier this week.  It was really snowing so I ended up wearing tights and these black pumps.  As for my new over the knee boots, as you know I was a little scared to try this trend, and now I can't get enough!  I always felt they would make me look even shorter than I already am, but it turns out they elongate and are incredibly comfortable.  My coat is one of my favorite hand-me-downs from my mom, but I found a similar coat (on major SALE here $159) and also here $449.  I've linked several similar dresses and the rest of my outfit details below!

Winter Wonderland

Happy Wednesday, Friends!

Geez, this month is flying by... I must admit, my Christmas cheer has been a little low this year.  Typically by this time I am blaring Christmas music and the house has been decorated for almost a month, but this year has been different.  I think it may have a little to do with the loss of Charlie Brown  (Jonny says Charlie had a lot of Christmas "whoop") and the warm weather late into the fall.  As much as I love this time of year it hasn't felt the same until last night.

Last night we went to our first Christmas party of the season.  The snow started falling just before we arrived and it was just magical! We toured all of the beautiful Christmas lights in the city after the party and I finally feel like I can put up some decorations today :).  Wish me luck!

I am so happy that rules like, "No white after Labor Day," are a thing of the past.  I think a completely white or off white look is perfect for the holidays.  I am planning on wearing this whole J.McLaughlin (minus my boots which are currently 25% off and purse) when we head to the mountains over the holidays.  My fur poncho is so warm and cozy, and I have been wearing the turtleneck under everything!!  I love that that their clothes are tailored to a woman's body, which means the jeans I am wearing have a great mid rise.  I would also recommend sizing down if you are between sizes.

Christmas Jammies - Gift Guide

Every year one of our favorite holiday traditions is our pajama exchange.  Growing up we had so many fun holiday traditions - singing Christmas carols on Christmas Eve with my whole extended family, baking cookies for our friends and neighbors from my grandmothers cookbook (I shared a few of my favorites with my mom last year here), decorating the house and tree with our dad after Thanksgiving, dressing up in matching dresses and bows to meet Santa, waking up early to open our stockings, and opening our matching Christmas jammies on Christmas Eve.  

Obviously some of these traditions have dwindled, like visiting Santa in matching dresses.  And even decorating the house after Thanksgiving.  But our Christmas jammie tradition lives on and is something that my sisters and I look forward to and have even gotten each of our husbands/boyfriends involved.  It has even become competitive at times as to who can find the best, most comfortable, sometimes cute, sometimes silly pajamas in everyones sizes... its always a fun task!

My jammies that I am wearing here are so so warm and comfy - I wore them all weekend in the mountains this past weekend and threw this Margaret O'leary cardigan over them for the perfect extra layer.  My slippers are 50% off and are so warm and have been perfect to just slip on since Stanley has to go out pretty much every 15 minutes since we are still working on potty training.  I ordered these for my sisters, mom and me and these for the guys for this years exchange and can't wait for them to arrive.  They are also currently 60% off - bonus (CODE: GIFTSALE)!!

Holiday Card Ready

Hi Guys!

I hope you are having a lovely week.  I put real clothes on for the first time yesterday - and today am back in my p.j.'s .... the doctor said this flu is lasting 10 days - 3 weeks and wow, am I red nosed vision in sweats.  My poor husband.  

Right before Thanksgiving we took pictures for our holiday card(s).  My whole family was in town so before Jonny, Stanley and I took our pictures we were able to take a few with my sisters, and their significant others and my mom as well which we haven't done in a long time.  Growing up we would take holiday photos every year, but actually getting the holiday card itself out was always a big task.

The past three years Jonny and I have used Minted and I am more amazed by the way they ease the process every year! Where I shop small

I often get asked where I like to shop in Denver.  Of course I find great things at the mall, but I love being able to run to my favorite boutiques, say hi to the owners that have become friends, and know that I am going to find something unique and special.

And if you have been following my blog since the beginning, you know that the reason I started Denver Darling is to be a resource to girls (and guys!) in our awesome city.  When I first made the decision to start my blog I would constantly send out lists to my friends and friends friends about the best places to shop or get a manicure or their hair did.  So I figured there would be no better day than today to share my favorite places that I shop small!

Patterns and Pops: Lindsay and Brittany from Patterns and Pops are two of the sweetest girls and they have clothes and gifts just as the name of their store describes with great patterns and pops of color.  My top is so cozy for the holidays (above) and can be found on their site here! Gracies: Gracies is one of the first places I posted about (here and here).  They always have fun and affordable pieces.  They do a HUGE sale twice a year that is 75% off the whole store, and they just opened online as well and are offering 20% off for Small Business Saturday.

Stitch: Stitch has all of the Colorado girl essentials. Great cozy sweaters, and fun graphic tees.  I got my favorite Broncos tee from there.  I love this bright shift that I got there last year!

Garbarini: Garbarini is like the original gals boutique. They have been around forever, but have gorgeous current stuff.  Their price point is a bit higher than the other places I have listed, but I know I can always go in and find a great dress for a wedding or black tie event!  I always love their assortment of Milly and Alice and Olivia dresses - I wore this one and this one all summer long! And for Small Business Saturday, all sale items are an additional 50% off!

Real Baby: I got asked the other day about where to shop for baby stuff and gifts.  We obviously don't have a baby yet, but do have little niece and nephew and love the cute things at Real Baby and they are so helpful with clueless people like myself!

• Swoozies: Swoozies is a chain, but we are their only store in the west (had so much fun with them here and here)!
• Sit Stay Stich: My friend Taylor makes the most adorable dog collars - we are definitely getting Stanley one of the holiday inspired collars!

Black Friday Sale Roundup!

I hope you all had a wonderful Thanksgiving with your family and friends.  Jonny and I had a relaxing day and limited ourselves to only two Thanksgivings this year which made it so nice be able to enjoy more time with everyone and less time traveling to and from each destination.  Not to mention, we probably saved a few calories, but who is counting on Thanksgiving #amiright?
